What is bass wood and is of quality?
Used in firearm stocks
For a wood classified as a hardwood, bass wood is unusually soft -- not unlike pine. It has virtually no figure to it which makes it ideal for carving. Since it's soft and fairly lightweight, it's not very rugged. It's much less expensive than other woods traditionally used in firearm stocks.
