nikon d40 or canon digital rebel xt for beginner travel photographer?

also, can I use Nikon lens from a manual slr on a nikon digital slr?

Both cameras are good. The XT has more megapixels, but you'd only notice a slight difference in prints larger than 8x10 inches. I suggest you buy whichever camera feels best in your hands.
If you already have Nikon lenses, getting a Nikon dSLR seems obvious. There are two important things to consider however:
* With the D40 and D40X, Nikon economized on the auto-focus system to reduce the cost price. These two cameras only work properly with Nikon's AF-S and AF-I lenses. Other models, such as the discontinued Nikon D50 and D70, and the new D80 work with all Nikon AF lenses.
* All Nikon dSLR bodies effectively magnify your lenses by a factor 1.5. For example, a 28-70mm zoom will appear to be 42-105mm (multiply everything by 1.5). The same is true for the Canon XT, which has a 1.6 multiplier, but when you start from scratch you can take this into account when getting lenses.
