What can I expect from a commercial walk behind / ride on mower?
I have almost 2 acres of land. Some places in my yard the terrain can be a tad rough and I have a couple of obstacles. It takes me too long to cut my yard with one of my riding mowers. I have somehow acquired three riding mowers. All have 12.5 hp Briggs engines. 2 of the mowers have 42 inch cut and one has 38 inch cut.
My friend has offered to sell me a Snapper Kees Professional walk behind or ride on mower for $500. It is commercial grade. It has a 17 or 18 hp kawasaki engine, 48 inch cut.
I am wondering if this will reduce my cutting time drastically and can a walk behind / ride on mower handle my terrain? My terrain is mostly flat with quite a few bumps here and there. I am just tired of getting nickle and dimed on residential riding mowers and cannot afford to go buy commercial.
Thanks in advance!
Biggest difference between residential and commercial is the commercial units are built to run for hours a day. Residential are for a few hours per week.
The 48 inch cut should in theory help reduce the time it takes to mow your yard. That does depend on how fast your riding mowers are. Most lawn tractors are fairly slow while a zero turn mower really speeds up the process. I'm going to guess you have tractors so the commercial walk behind probably won't be all that much slower in ground speed. The extra width means less passes and you should be able to handle obstacles easier.
If you want to spend more on a new model the residential zero turns would be worth looking into. They can go over 6mph and turn on a dime. I saw a nice Ariens on sale at HomeDepot this weekend for about $2k. Sturdy, American made, and at a good price point I thought. Good reviews on it too.
If you do want to go the walk behind route ask to give it a test run in a yard. They can take a little getting used to and might not be something you'd enjoy operating. Certainly try it before buying.
