Used Saltwater Fishing Tackle

I am a novice fisherman with my equipment behind first. I had a pair of nominal 30 pounds and were eager to catch fish with it. Targets are the toothy species like Wahoo, King Mackerel and Barracuda, with occasional kingfish. Typical dimensions are less than 25 pounds. I'll be trolling deep diving plugs. I am planning to attach a bimini on the main line and connect 30 pounds to about 6 feet of mono £ 60 a knot Albright improved. What would you recommend Head for the configuration of wire? How short of a cable platform do I need for maximum effectiveness? If I need to change lures often, do I to remove the barrel swivel and just use a snap in the end? How do I connect the wire to my mono? Thank you! Neo

Sounds like a lot of complicated rigging - main line, double line, heavy leader and the leader wire - especially for the 20 fish class book. More nodes and other connections, the more points without breaking potential. In my experience of trolling (and albacore tuna mainly with few wahoo and dorado) you need heavy line to withstand the initial strike with the boat moving. After that, it's like the fight against a hooked fish from a boat at rest. If your main line is 30 pound test, a few feet closer to the line end is not capable of much help to the strike, and can not get in the way later. You can use a heavy leader for teeth or resist wear on the movement of the lure, but there is no need to double-line leader or another between the leader and the main line. But I took a lot of tuna (20-50 pounds) trolling feathers or Rapala CD-18 is linked directly to the main line. I think the story on the double line and long leaders is to a sailor who hand a big fish to gaff the last meters, or to protect against skin and tail of the fish line drag over a long struggle - with the necessary huge marlin and tuna and sharks, but not with 20 pounds. My view on this is that you are simply adding points of potential failure in the system longer than necessary. I just want to attach a swivel (swivel or blockage) to the main line node with the best you know, a leader and then crimp the braided wire or 6 feet at the other end of the pivot (or crimp a loop in the end the leader and use locking swivel to attach to the main line.) 6 feet should be sufficient to maintain the pivotal connection to interfere with the action of the lure, but short enough so that when you get the head of the rod tip the fish is close enough to gaff. (My other take on this is that 30 pounds line is a kind of light for fishing at sea - you'll have to drag your game just tight enough to keep the bait to draw the line as you move, or the initial strike will result in a rapid breakoff. But it also depends on how fast you are trolling. On the west coast, trolling speed is usually 8-10 knots and diving plugs have a huge amount of drag at that speed, so the drag must be tight enough. If you go slower, it will not be that much of a problem. We usually troll with 50-80 pound test.)
