What is longest time period you would leave a boat motor idle before winterizing it?
I used my boat in late November and will use it next in April. Should I winterize it now or should I just run the motor for a while. If I run the motor, how long should I run it for?
I live in the Toronto, Ontario, Region and I always add fuel stablizer to the gas tank in November. I always ensure the that the motor has no water in it and that the gear oil is clear. Last changed in November.
Also, it is a 4 stoke 90 hp Mercury outboard.
Does it get cold where you are?
I dont winterize mine but it doesnt get below freezing here.
I run it on the 'muffs' every few weeks in the driveway. throw in gas stabilizer and she's good to go.
If you are in a very cold climate, i would winterize...of course you have probably already had the coldest part of the year, so any damage would have already happened.
Run the motor on the water hose, let it warm up to the normal temp. 5 minutes or so, make sure its all good.
