Pros/Cons to using a steel shell casing for hunting rifle?
I bought some cheap ($8) ammo at a local store for my .308 hunting rifle. It's half the price of the Remington i normally buy so i was unsure how it would fire at first but the first 3 rounds gave me a 1/4" group at 100 yds. So far the only problem is that the steel heats up occasionally (3 in 20) and the empty case gets lodged in the chamber. it'll work free after a bit of tugging but i've heard of the rim splitting off the case and getting stuck in there really good. Are there any other pros or cons i should know of before buying more?
Yeah --- I use some of that cheap steel cased ammunition too..... It does have some advantages and its draw backs... I see you are acquainted with the draw backs....
In order to successfully use this steel cased stuff -- the kind of stuff that has the lacquer or polymer coating it is absolutely imperative you keep the chamber clean.... The chambers get dirty kind of fast - hence after firing the case gets stuck in the chamber and when you open the bolt it sticks in or the extractor claw rips the rim on the case leaving it jambed...... I had one cartridge where the rim and whole rear of the cartridge broke off and left the casing stuck in the chamber... What a pain in the rear it was to get that out of there..... Now that I take that extra time to keep the chamber cleaned it has not been a problem...
Barnual has a habit of doing that.... This has happened a couple of times with my Ruger and Remington rifles.... Its not that uncommon...
I find the .308 soft point Barnaul to be decently accurate and perfect for deer and other animals to 200 yards... I have not tried to take longer shots with this stuff but my son says its not that accurate over long distances.... Its great for hunting but not for target shooting at longer distances....
Its pro's are its cheap -- I target practice quite a bit... But rarely over 200 yards... My target practice is metal plates at various distances.. I dont shoot paper so dont give a crap if I can make 1 inch MOA shots... At long as I am hitting 8 inch steel at 200 yards and occasionaly a little more I am happy and this ammo does it....
Cons? --- Its dirty stuff that requires you pay extra attention to keeping the chamber clean and unfouled....
In the event it does foul up then dont get pissed -- Take a deep breath and do what I do... Pull out another rifle and keep on practicing... No sence getting upset....
