is it better to use smaller lures in shallow stillwater venues?

The reason why I ask is that I recently used some 8" soft plastics grubs on my local canal which is only about 4 - 6ft deep, and the combined weight of the large soft plastic grub plus the jig head made this lure pretty heavy, and so it hit the water with such a splash that in all probability it would have spooked any fish in the vicinity. I'm guessing that this wouldn't be such a problem in a deep lake or reservoir, where the water is already windswept and choppy, but would I benefit from choosing smaller lures that don't create such a splash on shallow stillwaters?

You'd be surprised at what splashes from enormous lures do to fish, especially big ones... the splash puts the fish into an investigative and curious mood.
