what kind of saltwater fishing are these kind of reels meant for and should i buy it?

i really like this reel http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_21821_151001003_151000000_151001000_151-1-3#prodDescription

would this be a good reel for surf fishing, pier fishing, offshore fishing, trolling, vertical jigging, etc. Or is this reel better for specific types of saltwater fishing? thanks. and do you think this is a good reel?
also, can you cast with these bulky reels? are they just meant for dropping down your line?

The Penn Special Senators -- at least the 112 and 113 -- are casting reels. The 112 is basically the same size as a Jigmaster 500 (which is very much a casting reel), good for 30 pound line; the 113 is a 40-50 pound reel, the 114 is good for up to about 80 pound line. The 113 is commonly used for casting large baits (mackerel up to a foot long) and heavy jigs for tuna, wahoo, billfish, etc.

The 112 would be fine for heavy pier or surf fishing (though I prefer the 500 for its faster gear ratio), the larger 113 and 114 would be more suited to fishing offshore for larger fish. I've never found the 113 too large for casting jigs or tossing mackerel for yellowtail, while the 114 is castable, but a bit big for any real distance, though you can fling a big bait 30-50 feet from the boat with it.

Yes, you can troll with them, or do bottom fishing, but if you're only going to do that you might as well get a non-special Senator and save a few bucks.
