Used Saltwater Fishing Tackle

I have mini ninjas for the wii, and for the longest time I have been stuck at the part where the village got flooded, and the dude wants me to catch the fish. I keep getting a hold of it, but then it drags me everywhere, and eventually escapes. How do I catch it and MOVE ON?
